The Piano House Film
Watch our film of The Piano House featuring Erin Cebula, Shawn Lee, and Jen Friesen enjoying the interior spaces and outdoor rooftop patio.
Nestled in the serene Beach Grove neighbourhood of Tsawwassen, British Columbia, stands a truly unique architectural gem called The Piano House. Located at 1623 Duncan Drive, this striking landmark is not only a luxury residence but an artistic statement that sparks curiosity in anyone who lays eyes upon it.
The Piano House story is deeply rooted in family and connection. It began in 2014 when Juno-nominated singer/songwriter Warren Dean Flandez and his wife Katherine fell in love with the Beach Grove area. They initially purchased a small A-frame home on Duncan Drive with the intention of relocating the original structure and starting from scratch to build their dream home. The project became a family affair when Warren enlisted his father, Dennis Flandez, a seasoned architect at Stantec, to design the home. This was Dennis Flandez’s first residential project and a deeply personal one. To achieve his goal of creating an oasis celebrating both Japanese and Western elements, Dennis enlisted the help of his most trusted engineering allies, and together, they constructed a home of lasting quality and timeless appeal.
Also adding to the family collaboration is Warren’s cousin, Dexter Dolores, an accomplished interior designer who played a crucial role in designing the home’s interiors. Dexter’s contributions bring a warm, inviting feel to the modern space, blending contemporary elements with personalized accents that complement the house’s overall aesthetic.
The Piano House is a one-of-a-kind luxury home. Its exterior is composed of wood and modern materials, with a black-and-white color scheme designed as a nod to the beauty of a grand piano. Dennis used the Japanese art of shou sugi ban to create this dramatic, contemporary aesthetic. This traditional technique involves burning cedar planks, polishing them, and sealing them with natural oils. It creates a modern rustic look that stands out and stands up to our inclement West Coast weather. Large sweeping windows are located on all levels of the home, offering abundant natural light and a connection to nature. The sprawling rooftop patios provide endless possibilities for entertaining, gardening, or making music, in Warren’s case. The large, lush backyard offers even more space to create or relax amongst the well-tended, zen gardens.
The home’s interior showcases authentic open-concept living, with varying over-height ceilings that reveal themselves one by one as you enter. Everywhere you look, you’ll enjoy clean lines and mid-century features, and the neutral palette creates a gallery-like setting that allows an owner’s art collection to shine. The living space is expansive and complemented by a central courtyard that blends seamlessly with nature. Anchoring this tranquil space is Dennis’ hand-crafted cedar bench and a flame-red Japanese maple, which symbolizes peace, longevity, and prosperity. On the second level, you’ll find 3 spacious bedrooms, with the primary offering a walk-in closet and a spa-like ensuite.
Adding to the home’s prestige, The Piano House has been captured by renowned architectural and interior design photographer Ema Peter. Her striking images highlight the artistry and intricate details of the house, emphasizing its unique aesthetic. Furthermore, the property has earned the distinction of being featured in Architectural Digest, Attitude Interior Design, Label Magazine, City Roma News, and Vancouver Is Awesome, further solidifying its status as a landmark of modern architecture.
The Piano House is truly a testament to the power of architecture to inspire, reflect, and stand out in its environment. With its modern design and deep-rooted family warmth, it is a must-see example of how art, culture, and community can come to life in residential architecture.
