Queen Charlotte

1101 Nicola Street

Vancouver
The Queen Charlotte at 1101 Nicola Street is a celebrated heritage landmark in Vancouver’s West End, known for its striking Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. Built in 1928 by Dominion Construction, it was originally conceived as a luxury apartment-hotel, offering live-in management, maid service, and the most modern conveniences of its time. Its exterior is defined by symmetrical façades, mission-style gables, projecting eaves with traditional roof tiles, and large divided-light wood-frame windows. The building’s two-storey arched main entry remains a distinctive feature that sets it apart in the neighbourhood.

In the late 1970s, the Queen Charlotte was converted into 25 strata condominiums, while retaining much of its historic character. Inside, the building showcases original Art Deco detailing, including a Turnbull brass-gated elevator, hardwood floors in the public areas, ornate wood stair banisters, and vintage metal light fixtures. A significant restoration program began in the early 1990s, with careful rehabilitation of interior features and a major exterior restoration completed in 1996, which earned recognition from the Vancouver Heritage Foundation.

Today, the Queen Charlotte offers a boutique living experience that blends history with modern convenience. Residents benefit from amenities such as a bike and storage room, shared laundry facilities, garden spaces, and a recreation area. Nestled on a tree-lined street just steps from Davie and Denman, the building is within walking distance of English Bay Beach, Stanley Park, and an array of cafés, restaurants, and shops. Its timeless character and sought-after location make it one of the West End’s most admired heritage residences.
