According to the city of Vancouver a laneway house is "a small house at the rear of a lot near the lane and includes both a dwelling unit and parking/accessory uses. Essentially it fits in between to regular sized houses.

INTEGRAL HOUSE BY SHIM-SUTCLIFFE ARCHITECTS
This shapely house in Toronto’s Rosedale neighbourhood was named for its likeness to the mathematical integral symbol, and is a celebration of music, performance and numbers. Appropriately then, this sleek, gorgeous, 18,000 sq. ft. home was built for James Stewart, a revered mathematician and violinist from Toronto.
